SEATTLE – Patrocinar un programa veraniego de comidas para niños es un compromiso grande pero remunerador para 150 organizaciones de Washington. Conforme las escuelas entran a las vacaciones de verano, los estudiantes pudieran mantener el contacto con sus amigos. Sin embargo podrían perderse las comidas gratis o a precio rebajado que recibirían regularmente en la escuela.

Pero más de 150 organizaciones comunitarias de Washington trabajan para remediar eso patrocinando lugares de comidas veraniegas. Un reto es enterar a las familias de bajos ingresos sobre la existencia de estos programas, para lo cual United Way del Condado King enlistó a 80 trabajadores de Americorps. Lauren McGowan, de United Way, comenta que el equipo publicitará los programas además de ofrecer actividades artísticas, deportivas y de aprendizaje para invitar a los niños a presentarse y pasar un buen rato.

“Estos pequeños no sólo reciben una buena comida, sino que además obtienen educación y una oportunidad de incorporarse, para no retrasarse de sus semejantes que pueden estar yendo a un campamento o teniendo otras oportunidades en verano.”

Dice que los padres también valoran tener un lugar seguro para sus hijos durante el día. Un reporte reciente del Centro de Investigación y Acción Alimentaria (Food Research and Action Center) determina que los programas veraniegos de comidas atienden a más de 38 mil niños al día –pero eso es sólo el 11 por ciento de quienes califican para recibir comidas gratis durante el año escolar.

En todo el estado hay más de 770 lugares de comidas veraniegas, incluyendo más de 200 en el Condado King. Están ubicados en escuelas e iglesias, en parques y centros juveniles –y McGowan afirma que el sistema de Bibliotecas del Condado King se ha vuelto socio entusiasta.

“Realmente es como romper el molde –la regla de no meter comida a las bibliotecas–, y la están llevando. Han abierto sus puertas para ser un verdadero punto de comidas de verano, así que los niños tienen acceso al alimento y también acceso a oportunidades educativas durante el verano.”
