ACA Ruling and the Idahoans Left Behind

BOISE, Idaho - The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of a key component of the Affordable Care Act - the legality of payment subsidies in certain situations. Seventy-six thousand Idahoans have signed up for health coverage under the Affordable Care Act, yet there are 78,000 who don't qualify for the assistance and can't enroll in Medicaid coverage because the state has not redesigned the program to let them in.

"While many Idahoans are benefiting from increased access to affordable, quality health insurance, too many of our low-wage earners have been left out, and they fall into the coverage gap," said Lauren Necochea, director of Idaho Kids Count.

A governor's task force has recommended Idaho accept federal funding to allow those who fall into the gap to purchase reduced-price coverage through Medicaid, but the Legislature has not acted on the proposal. Necochea said this latest Supreme Court ruling could change that.

"The ruling is a confidence booster for the thousands of Idahoans who have signed up for health coverage," she said. "It's time for Idaho to act to close the coverage gap and ensure every Idahoans can afford to be healthy."

The governor's task force also has found that accepting the federal money would save millions of dollars because indigent-care funds would no longer be needed, and those are paid for by local and state taxpayers.

The high court's decision is online at supremecourt.gov.
