LANSING, Mich. – Each year, tens of thousands of premature babies, sick children, and their parents find solace and treatment at Children's Miracle Network hospitals. That care is made possible, in part, by contributions from credit unions in Michigan.

Sparrow Children's Center in Lansing is one of the state's Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. John Foren, director of marketing and communications with Sparrow Health System, says donations help ensure families don't have to add the burden of travel to an already difficult time.

"It's important for us to be able to keep the care in the community, so these families don't have to go a long way to get treatment for their children," he says.

Michigan credit unions have raised more than $300,000 for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, including $116,000 from the Michigan Credit Union League. The funds are divided equally among Sparrow Children's Center, Beaumont Children's Hospital in Royal Oak, Hurley Children's Hospital in Flint and DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

From babies weighing less than two pounds, to broken bones, heart defects and cancer, Children's Miracle Network hospitals treat all patients, regardless of a family's ability to pay. Foren says the word "miracle" is no exaggeration.

"You see the results," he says. "Kids leading wonderful lives, who are thriving because of the care they received due to the philanthropy and donations like the Credit Union League's."

Nationwide, credit unions are the third largest supporters of Children's Miracle Network hospitals, contributing $130 million since 1996 through the Credit Unions for Kids program.
