Medicare at 50: MI Nurses Join Call For Expansion

Thursday, July 30, 2015

DETROIT - It's a big birthday today as Medicare turns 50 and advocates say the best way to celebrate the milestone would be to expand the program to all Americans. Medicare provides health care to 55 million people age 65 and older, including nearly two million in Michigan.

John Armelagos president of the Michigan Nurses Association says over the past half-century, Medicare has proved itself to be not just an effective program, but an efficient one.

"It spends less than two percent of its budget in overhead, compared to private insurers who spend about 18 percent, and a lot of that 18 percent goes toward profit," says Armelagos.

A resolution to expand Medicare to all U.S. residents has been introduced by Michigan Congressman John Conyers. However, opponents of a universal health-care system call it government overreach.

A rally in support of the measure will take place at 11:30 a.m. at Detroit's Central United Methodist Church.

Armelagos says despite the success of Medicare and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, far too many people still fall into so-called "coverage gaps" and go without health care. Moreover, he says the current system is costing Americans more than it should without yielding a payoff in health benefits.

"We pay in the United States about 16, 18 percent more of our GDP towards health care as compared to other industrialized countries, and with those extra dollars that are spent, our health-care indices are only marginal compared to those other countries. "

In addition to the rally in Detroit, events will take place in 29 other cities to mark Medicare's 50th birthday. The resolution to expand Medicare is online at Congress.gov.
