Minnesotans Step Up in Thanksgiving Walk to End Hunger

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – A lot of Minnesotans sat down for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, but not everyone in the state had enough to eat.

To help with that, thousands of people at the Mall of America participated in the Walk to End Hunger.

Sophia Lenarz-Coy, associate director of Hunger Solutions Minnesota, says participants raised money for 15 groups that provide food to those who need it.

"You can't really think of a holiday that is more centered around food than Thanksgiving,” she points out. “And yet we live in a state where 9,000 people a day have to use a food shelf, because they don't have enough to eat otherwise."

Thursday's Walk to End Hunger took participants on about five laps around the mall, with the goal of raising about $365,000.

For every $25 that people donated, about 75 meals were to go to Minnesotans who need it most.

Lenarz-Coy says this comes as 13 percent more seniors are using food assistance than last year. And the number of overall visits to suburban food shelves has jumped about 90 percent in Minnesota over the past four years.

Lenarz-Coy adds the walk was a way to help alleviate those problems while also doing something healthy and fun.

"It's not a typical 5-K walk, where it's all about how many miles you're getting in,” she states. “It's really more of an event to celebrate together and take time to help out our neighbors in need."

Some of the groups working with this year's Walk to End Hunger included the Salvation Army and local Catholic Charities.
