2015: A Banner Year for Iowa Biodiesel

JOHNSTON, Iowa - The Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit is coming up next week in Altoona, and participants will be celebrating the Hawkeye State's biodiesel output.

A record 242 million gallons of biodiesel fuel was produced in Iowa during the last calendar year, well above the old record of 230 million. Monte Shaw, executive director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, says that was despite a lack of certainty caused by federal government inaction.

"It was really amazing because essentially, for the vast majority of 2015, there was no functioning renewable fuel standard, nor was there a biodiesel blender's tax credit," says Shaw. "It had expired."

He says progressive state policies helped relieve some of the market uncertainty. Shaw predicts that, with the federal renewable fuel standard and tax credit now in place, 2016 will be an even better production year for biodiesel.

He notes the sources used to make Iowa's biodiesel fuel are changing, with more corn oil now being used than in the past.

"One of the nice things about biodiesel is it can be made from a variety of feedstocks," he says. "Everything from the, you know, the used cooking oil from the french fryer at the fast food restaurant, to animal fats and soybean oil. So, plants can really look at the market and see what feedstock is cost-effective, and have a chance to use that."

Iowa has traditionally been the nation's leader in renewable fuels production, with a dozen biodiesel facilities and 43 ethanol refineries. The 10th annual Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit is Jan. 19.
