Boston Support for Obama’s Tough Talk Against Muslim Ban

BOSTON -- Human-rights activists in the Commonwealth are expressing support for President Obama's comments in the wake of the shooting in Orlando, Fla.

The president condemned Donald Trump's proposal to ban Muslims from the United States. In the wake of Sunday's Orlando nightclub massacre, Obama said, "Now we are seeing how dangerous this kind of mindset and thinking can be."

Chris Flynn, Boston-based national board member of the Human Rights Campaign, said he also believes that proposals for sanctions that single out Muslims are against what the nation stands for.

"When politicians make outrageous comments against any community, that does not represent us," he said, "and I think it is about love. It is about standing up and saying, 'That's what I believe.' "

Democratic contender Hillary Clinton also chastised the presumptive Republican nominee for comments which she said made it appear that Obama was sympathetic to ISIS. Trump responded by telling the Associated Press that while Obama "claims to know our enemy," he "continues to prioritize our enemy over our allies and, for that matter, the American people."

Flynn attended Tuesday night's vigil in Boston for the Orlando shooting victims, an event he said thankfully was free of political rancor.

"What was amazing is the way the community came together," he said, "gay, straight, all races, religions to honor those that had died in Orlando -- you know, remembering other people who died in acts of violence against the LBTQ community."

Flynn said he believes what is needed is common-sense gun laws. He said the last thing the nation should do is respond in a hateful manner.

"Whatever was driving the perpetrator -- whether he hated himself, whether he hated LGBTQ -- how do we overcome that hate? And love is the answer, I guess," he said. "Love conquers hate."
