MI Delegates Talk RNC Revolt, Need for Party Unity

LANSING, Mich. - Michigan delegates were among those present when chaos broke out on the floor of the Republican National Convention on Monday, as an effort to block Donald Trump's nomination failed. Comments from Andrew Richner, University of Michigan Regent and Kasich delegate; and state Sen. Patrick Colbeck, R-Canton, a Cruz delegate.

Michigan's Republican delegates are in the thick of political activities at the Republican National Convention, and on Monday witnessed last-minute efforts to "dump Trump." Despite protests from the convention floor, party leaders rejected an effort by delegates who want to deny Trump the nomination.

University of Michigan Regent and Kasich delegate, Andrew Richner, said he doesn't support the revolt efforts at the RNC.

"Donald Trump won fair and square," he said. "He wasn't my candidate but Donald Trump won a majority of the delegates and he deserves the nomination based on the rules of the party."

Michigan state Senator Patrick Colbeck, a Ted Cruz delegate, said most Republicans are united around the issues Trump is promoting, but at issue is how he goes about it.

"He's been doing it by a slash-and-burn approach to party faithful and it's kind of in violation to Reagan's 11th commandment when he's gone off and done that," Colbeck said.

The "11th commandment" directed Republicans to not speak ill of one another. Twenty-five delegates from Michigan are bound to support Trump, 17 to Cruz, and 17 to Kasich.

Colbeck said Trump is just as unfavorable a candidate as Hillary Clinton, and believes the GOP must find common ground if it wants to win the White House.

"Most of the folks that are frustrated by his nomination right now are just wanting to make sure that we're all united around the idea that we do not want Hillary Clinton in the White House," he said. "We're just making sure that we have the candidate that's put forward that has the best opportunity to defeat her."

Richner notes that Michigan is always vital to any presidential campaign, and especially this year with Trump in the race.

"Donald Trump brings new people to the table, new voters, voters that may have traditionally voted in the Democratic Party in the past who are attracted to his message, and that makes Michigan a competitive state," Richner said.
