CONCORD, N.H. - The statistics tell us that August is a prime month for the arrival of newborns, and a new report places places the Granite State in the top five states for affordability when having a baby.

Jill Gonzalez, an analyst for the online survey group "WalletHub," said the Granite State scores especially high when it comes to services available after children are born.

"New Hampshire is actually Number One when it comes to the maternity practices, specifically in infant nutrition and care, so if there are any complications following the birth, you can pretty much rest assured that you'll be in good hands in New Hampshire," she said.

The WalletHub survey ranks New Hampshire fourth in the nation overall, for best states to deliver a baby, using 17 key metrics about the cost and availability of services in all 50 states.

Gonzalez said New Hampshire is just behind Maine in the New England rankings, but is still among the top five nationwide for best states to have a baby.

"New Hampshire is still one of the affordable states for actually delivering a baby; it has the third-lowest hospital C-section charges, and fourth-lowest conventional-delivery charges," she added.

Other metrics in the survey include the annual cost of infant care and number of pediatricians per capita in each state.
