Trade Deal Opponents in Michigan Step Up Their Fight

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - As President Obama ramps up his efforts to build support for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, some opponents of the trade deal in Michigan are stepping up their fight as well.

A rally will be held today in Ann Arbor opposing the deal, which would set new terms for trade and business between a dozen countries, including the United States.

President of the Michigan AFL-CIO Ron Bieber contended that the TPP will result in lost jobs and put U.S. companies at a competitive disadvantage to other nations. He said the deal is especially harmful in a state such as Michigan that is heavily manufacturing-based.

"Michigan's trade deficit is the worst in the nation, and it's because we make things in Michigan, we're a manufacturing state," he said. "And when you craft trade policies that are bad for Michigan and bad for workers, it's bad for our Michigan economy."

Obama has said the deal will make American products easier to sell abroad and also help the country compete globally with China. Today, leaders from labor, politics and the community will rally against the deal, which they say will hurt Michigan workers and families.

Bieber said Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Dingell of Dearborn, State Representative Gretchen Driskell of Saline, and Macomb County Prosecutor Suzanna Shkreli will be among the political leaders in attendance.

"There's been some really, really strong women who were out early and have been more vocal than anyone," he added. "Congresswoman Debbie Dingell was one of the first I know that jumped in and led the charge against the TPP."

Driskell and Shkreli are running against Republican representatives who voted in favor of fast-tracking the TPP. Meanwhile, Obama has noted his desire to have the deal approved this fall, while presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump say they are opposed to the deal.
