PORTLAND, Ore. – With holiday shopping about to begin in full force, small businesses want Oregonians to keep them in mind.

Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday, which began in 2010 and is meant to encourage people during one of the busiest shopping weeks of the year to buy gifts locally.

"Small Business Saturday was created as really a tool to attract more shoppers to local businesses and there's a lot of businesses who offer special discounts and sales and that kind of thing during Small Business Saturday," explains David Noble, senior vice president for marketing with Rivermark Community Credit Union.

Despite competition from a growing e-commerce market, small business employees' wage earnings have grown by more than 2.5 percent over the past year, according to the payroll review company Paychex.

The U.S. Small Business Administration found 99.4 percent of all businesses in Oregon were small businesses in 2015.

Large retailers are a lot of competition this time of year, but Noble says the local businesses his credit union works with are thriving.

"I certainly think that there's an impact there, but I think that the economy – the local economy in particular – has been doing very well and our business members and customers have said that these have been pretty good years,” Noble states. “So we expect the holiday season to be another good one for them."

To inspire people to shop locally on Small Business Saturday, Rivermark is donating 25 cents to Doernbecher Children's Hospital for every debit or credit card transaction its members make on that day.
