HARTFORD, Conn. – A leading expert on fraud schemes and how to protect yourself from them is visiting Connecticut this week.

Fraud and identity theft are booming businesses. This Thursday, AARP, in collaboration with the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators, is hosting a presentation by Frank Abagnale, who has advised the FBI on how to outsmart con artists for more than 40 years.

He should know. By age 21, Abagnale had conned people out of millions of dollars himself.

Erica Michalowski, community outreach director for the AARP Connecticut state office, says she's attended three of Abagnale’s presentations and has learned something new every time.

"What he does is he keeps up on what's happening,” Michalowski relates. “He talks about how things are changing in this world, and our information is not our own anymore."

The presentation will be at the Sky Convention Center in Uncasville. The event is free but online registration is required.

Michalowski notes that email and telephone fraud schemes, including IRS impersonators and romance scams, are increasing at a rapid pace. But it is possible to fight back.

"There is protection against it if you are vigilant and you are empowering yourself to get out ahead of the scammers and not let them into your life," she stresses.

Michalowski adds that anyone who feels he or she has been a victim of fraud can get help and advice by calling AARP's Fraud Watch Network Helpline at 877-908-3360.

Michalowski says being informed always is the best defense.

"Best place to go to receive watchdog alerts and tips and resources, and it's free for anyone no matter where you live in the country, is AARP.org/fraudwatchnetwork," she points out.
