SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Cuatro comunidades de California verán algunas mejoras grandes en los próximos meses - gracias al programa Subvenciones del Desafío Comunitario 2019 de la AARP ("2019 AARP Community Challenge Grant).

La parte oeste de Sacramento utilizará datos para identificar a los adultos mayores que tengan mayor riesgo de un incendio en su hogar, luego distribuirán alarmas de humo y de monóxido de carbono. El Fideicomiso de la Tierra del Barrio de Los Ángeles ("Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust") construirá un amigable parque vecinal que acoja a gente con movilidad limitada. El Centro de Desarrollo de la Comunidad Thai ("Thai Community Development Center") en la parte oeste de Hollywood será más accesible.

Y Erik Tilkemeier, del Centro Thai de Desarrollo Comunitario ("Thai Community Development Center"), en el oeste de Hollywood, dice que su agencia transformará un lote vacío en San Diego en un lugar de respiro para la gente que venga de fuera del centro de tráfico cercano.

"Bueno, tendra varios resultados positivos. Vemos el desarrollo del lugar como una construccion comunitaria, oportunidad de cohesion social, asi como una oportunidad de desarrollo economico activo y una oportunidad de tener transportacion activa."

Todos los proyectos son rápidos - deben estar terminados el 4 de Noviembre. Este es el tercer año que la AARP otorga las becas, algunas hasta de 37 mil dólares, para promover espacios públicos vibrantes, una mayor accesibilidad, proyectos de Ciudades Inteligentes ("Smar Cities") orientados por datos, tránsito mejorado y vivienda accesible.

Rafi Nazarians, de la AARP California, dice que más de 17 mil organismos sin fines de lucro y agencias gubernamentales compiten por los subsidios, y como un 10 por ciento hizo el recorte.

"Cento cincuenta y nueve donatarios fueron elegidos y un total de casi $1.6 millones de dolares se distribuiran para financiar en todo el pais esas subvenciones de accion rapida. Y ayudaran a que se hagan mejoras inmediatas y poner en marcha el progreso de largo plazo para apoyar a los residentes de todas las edades"

El programa es parte de la Iniciativa nacional Comunidades Habitables de la AARP.
