DRIGGS, Idaho – AARP has chosen four projects in Idaho to receive grant funding from this year's Community Challenge Grant program.

The organization awarded nearly $1.6 million to 159 projects across the country, selecting proposals that make cities more livable for people of all ages.

The City of Driggs applied for a grant to install foosball and game tables in its new downtown plaza space.

Francoise Cleveland, associate state director of advocacy for AARP Idaho, says the proposal is designed to attract people to the plaza.

"The goal of this project is to improve socialization of citizens of all ages, have a local community meeting place and having activities there for all ages to participate in so that it builds community identification and. basically, a place where everyone gets to know each other," she states.

The Kaniksu Land Trust in Sandpoint was chosen to develop a half-mile of nature trail, and a grant will help the Valley of the Tetons Library in Victor with renovations, including an outdoor area with free Internet access.

The Idaho Walk Bike Alliance will conduct pop-up demonstrations in Boise to determine how walkable and bike-friendly city neighborhoods are.

Cleveland says while some projects may last for just a short time, they're designed to spark the imagination of a community.

"Looking at, 'What could our community be like if we changed this one aspect of it, and with that quick-action grant and project?'” she states. “Then, hopefully, it builds momentum to really impact the broader community."

The projects must be completed by Nov. 4.
