LAS CRUCES, N.M. – A weeklong "Defund Hate" campaign by the group Indivisible culminates in rallies across New Mexico today.

The campaign wants Congress to cut overall funding for two federal agencies: Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The group also wants Congress to approve legislation that would prevent ICE from taking money meant for other agencies.

Greg White, chair of Indivisible Las Cruces, says American voters need to know how their money is being spent.

"Our purpose is to reiterate that the funding for the wall is really something that needs to be looked at, and the funding for the organizations need to really be looked at, in the context of accountability,” says White.

The Las Cruces Indivisible rally begins at 9 a.m. at the office of 2nd District Democratic Congresswoman Xochitl Torres Small. Rallies are also planned today in Santa Fe and Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Indivisible's national legislative director, Mary Small, says even Democrats who are pro-immigration enable agencies such as ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection by signing off on funding bills.

"Decisions about federal spending belong to Congress,” says Small. “And yet, you have an administration that is completely disregarding that, that thinks it gets to write it's own appropriation, that it can spend whatever money it wants. And I think that, understandably, has tons of people all across the country completely outraged."

Small believes it should alarm all Americans that money is being allocated to ICE from the Federal Emergency Management Agency just after Hurricane Dorian and while peak hurricane season continues through the end of October.
