SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- El servicio anual gratuito de Asistencia Fiscal arrancó este fin de semana - abierto a personas de todas las edades. Comenta Gary Jurovich, coordinador estatal de la Fundación AARP en California del Norte.

Otra vez esa temporada tan temida del año... ¡la hora de los impuestos! Pero las buenas noticas son que el programa anual de Ayuda Fiscal, a cargo de la AARP, ya funciona a toda marcha para ayudar a la gente a prepararse desde ahora hasta la fecha límite, el 15 de abril. Gary Jurovich, de la Fundación AARP, dice que hay asistentes voluntarios altamente calificados y esperando su turno de ayudar en centros de adultos mayores, bibliotecas, iglesias y oficinas gubernamentales a lo largo y ancho del estado.

"Toda nuestra gente nueva pasa por un amplio entrenamiento antes de certificarse y preparar los retornos. Y todos nuestros consejeros de retornos que vuelven ano tras ano tienen que actualizarse cada vez. Todos tienen que pasar tres examenes diferentes."

El año pasado casi 200 mil californianos recibieron ayuda gratuita con sus devoluciones. Cobraron más de 92 millones de dólares en reembolsos federales y más de 13 millones en Créditos Fiscales por Ingresos del Trabajo (Earned Income Tax Credits). A nivel nacional, en 2019 esas cifras sumaron uno punto seis billones en reembolsos y 200 millones del crédito fiscal.

Jurovich agrega que una de las ideas más erróneas es que estos servicios son exclusivos para personas mayores de 50 años, o "sólo para miembros".

"Hay gente que piensa que tienes que ser miembro de la AARP, lo que es absolutamente falso. Claro que es gratis. Mucha gente viene y cree que habra una tarifa. No la hay. Es gratis. Preparamos las devoluciones, tanto federales como estatales, y luego solicitamos electronicamente las devoluciones."
