Educadores aplauden decisión de auditar a un "College” en línea

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Los grupos educativos están elogiando una decisión unánime tomada este miércoles por el comité legislativo, para auditar al primer colegio comunitario en línea del estado, llamado Calbright College. Los legisladores expresaron preocupación acerca de la transparencia y la duplicación de las ofertas disponibles actualmente. Jeff Freitas, presidente de la Federación de Maestros de California, dice que los 140 millones invertidos en Calbright pudieran haber sido mejor gastados para reforzar los programas en línea existentes en los planteles comunitarios.

"Pudo haberse hecho más barato, pudo hacerse con la experiencia de la facultad que ya está empleada por nuestros colegios comunitarios."

El Colegio Calbright despegó el primero de octubre y tiene inscritos 450 estudiantes, pero sólo 38 de ellos buscan certificarse en codificación médica 'I-T', o en ciberseguridad. La meta del plantel es ayudar a los adultos que trabajan a recibir entrenamiento laboral flexible y a bajo costo.

Jim Mahler, presidente del Consejo del Colegio Comunitario CFT (CFT Community College), dice que el desequilibrio de fondos a favor de Calbright es absoluto.

"Si consideramos la financiación por estudiante como equivalente al tiempo completo en Calbright, están siendo financiados a una tasa de mil veces más de lo que el resto de nuestros estudiantes reciben de fondos en nuestros colegios comunitarios tradicionales."

Carlos Tuner Cortez, presidente de Educación Continua de San Diego (San Diego Continuing Education), parte del Distrito de San Diego Community College, está lanzando su propio programa de educación en línea.

"El costo de lanzar la "ICOM Academy" fue de 500 mil - menos del uno por ciento del presupuesto de Calbright. Podríamos hacer mucho más por apoyar al éxito de los estudiantes reinvirtiendo esos fondos en distritos existentes que buscan ampliar las oportunidades de educación a distancia."

Calbright no tiene maestros de tiempo completo y se le ha criticado por otorgar sin licitación un contrato de reclutamiento ejecutivo a un amigo del ex presidente de la universidad.
