AUSTIN, Texas -- La Encuesta Comunidad Estadunidense 2018 ("2018 American Community Survey") encontró que casi el 18% de los tejanos de 50 años o más, y la cuarta parte de los mayores de 65, viven solos.

Es la gente con más probabilidades de ser afectada por el aislamiento social en la pandemia actual por Coronavirus, pero hay muchas opciones para sacarse la espina de este momento difícil.

Las investigaciones muestran que demasiado aislamiento social tiene efectos negativos en las personas, y la pandemia por Coronavirus empeoró el problema. Pero hay muchas tácticas para ayudarte a sobrellevarlo.

Entre la gente mayor el aislamiento social es común pues vive sola luego de perder a su pareja o a una amistad, o por tener problemas de salud que limitan su movilidad.

De acuerdo a Nancy Wilson, profesora del Colegio Baylor de Medicina ("Baylor College of Medicine"), es importante evaluar tu nivel ansiedad en esa crisis de salud. Si bien mucha gente usa las redes sociales o "apps" en el teléfono para contactarse, Wilson dice que conectar con una persona no tiene por qué ser complicado.

"Hay mucho énfasis en contactar virtualmente con la gente, pero ¿esa es una forma significativa? He oído a muchos adultos mayores decir 'sólo quiero tener una simple plática por teléfono.'"

Willson dice que es sabido que el aislamiento excesivo causa muerte prematura, disminución cognitiva, salud cardiovascular reducida, depresión o infartos. Recomienda la "amistad con iniciativa" durante esta difícil etapa y espera que mucha gente conozca más a sus vecinos cuando esto termine.

La Directora de la AARP Texas, Tina Tran, dice que casi el 18 por ciento de los tejanos con 50 años y más, y la cuarta parte de los mayores de 65, viven solos y quieren estar en contacto con el mundo exterior. Explica que para ese fin la AARP creó un nuevo servicio llamado Conexiones de la Comunidad ("Community Connections"), en Connect2Affect.org (Conéctate al Afecto).

"Conectar a voluntarios que buscan ser esa voz amigable que le llama a la gente que quiere que alguien le llame cada semana sólo para tocar base, sólo para preguntarle cómo está."

Wilson agrega que elCOVID-19 ha impedido a muchos adultos mayores asistir a sus clases regulares de ejercicio, pero aún es posible programar una fecha para caminar con una hija o un hijo, amigo o vecino.

"Y hasta cuando sólo caminas yendo y viniendo, sales y caminas yendo y viniendo por la acera, y siempre digo camina y platica y pon el cronómetro en unos 10 minutos, después tal vez quieras descansar, luego caminar 10 minutos más."

La oficina "Texas Health and Human Services" (Servicios Humanos y de Salud de Texas) lanzó su apoyo estatal de salud en línea, con servicio 24/7 y cobertura estatal, para quienes experimenten estrés a causa de la pandemia. Da servicio en inglés y en español, en el teléfono 1-833-986-1919.
