Nevadans Join Rallies to Save U.S. Postal Service

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Nevadans will join rallies scheduled in several locations tomorrow for a "National Day of Action" in the wake of U.S. Postal Service cutbacks.

Following a nationwide outcry, the Postal Service director this week agreed to back down from planned changes to mail service that included reduced office hours, overtime cuts for mail carriers and the removal of post office drop boxes.

Vivian Leal, an organizer of the Nevada protests and a member of the Fair Democracy team at Indivisible Northern Nevada, said the post office should not be politicized, since the COVID pandemic has made it clear it might be the only way to vote safely for many Nevadans.

"Just like we have other services in our country that protect our democracy," said Leal, "we feel the Postal Service is now really engaged in the work of the nation and we must, must support them."

The Nevada governor signed legislation to expand the state's vote-by-mail for the November election earlier this month, a move immediately met by a Trump administration lawsuit.

Protests, with masks required, will be held in northern Nevada at Reno's Vassar Street Post Office, and post office locations in south Reno, Sparks and Carson City from 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow.

Leal lives with multiple sclerosis and, like many others, depends on postal workers to deliver her prescriptions. She said engineering delays in mail delivery for partisan reasons is hurting people, because health insurance companies closely monitor prescription renewals.

"You only have a couple of days of extra medication should there be a delay," said Leal. "And it's not a week, it's couple of days. And I know this is especially true for seniors. So, you're literally counting down pills every time you're running out."

Nevada used mail-in ballots for its June primary. For November, ballots are scheduled to be mailed to all active voters 20 days before the election, which is earlier than the 14-day deadline previously required to request a ballot.
