FREMONT, Calif. - Ocho comunidades de California ganaron subsidios para terminar proyectos que mejoren su habitabilidad -parte del Reto Comunitario 2020 de la AARP ("2020 AARP Community Challenge"). 184 comunidades de todo el país recibirán dos punto cuatro millones de dólares combinados para mejorar espacios abiertos, hacer las ciudades más "caminables" y aumentar la vivienda accesible. Jennifer Berdugo, de la AARP California, dice que también buscan fundar nuevos tipos de proyectos, incluyendo algunos que ayuden a tener una respuesta ante el Coronavirus.

"Este año abrimos una nueva categoría que busca proyectos que pueden ayudar a incrementar el compromiso civil y a demostrar el valor tangible de las ciudades inteligentes."

Los subsidios apoyarán muchas iniciativas, incluyendo un programa en San Diego para educar a la comunidad de refugiados Iraquíes en el tema del transporte público, un nuevo espacio en el arroyo San Leandro, un centro fílmico en "Echo Park," medidas COVID en la alberca y en el mercado de agricultores de Hayfork, nuevo espacio verde que administrará la Iniciativa de Salud Chinatown ("Chinatown Health Initiative") en todo el Río de Los Ángeles, y vivienda asequible en el Condado de Monterrey.

La AARP California también está subsidiando dos proyectos adicionales. Donna Deutchman, de la organización sin fines de lucro "Home 4 Families" (Hogar para las Familias), dice que construye una comunidad de viviendas para veteranos en Palmdale.

"La AARP aportó bancas y detalles florales, lo que permite a nuestros veteranos mayores ver a sus vecinos, ver jugar a los niños en el patio de recreo."

Suzanne Shenfil, de la ciudad de Fremont, dice que el subsidio "Community Challenge," Reto Comunitario, se destinará a un jardín de su nuevo "Age Well Center" - que abre en Enero, justo al lado de un complejo de viviendas para adultos mayores.

"Podremos invitarles a venir a trabajar en el jardin, y ojalá eso empiece a reducir un poco el aislamiento que hemos tenido durante la pandemia del COVID."

Las frutas y los vegetales cosechados después serán usados para hacer comidas saludables en el centro.
