Montanans Have Time to Register in Person Until Polls Close

HELENA, Mont. -- Election Day is almost here and unregistered voters in Montana don't need to stress out.

The Treasure State is one of 20 states where voters still have time to sign up to vote.

Erin Miller, statewide organizing manager for the Forward Montana Foundation, said people might assume there is a deadline to register in Montana because there is in many other states.

"It's really important to know that you can register to vote in person now at your county elections office up until 8 p.m. on Election Day and receive a ballot on the spot," Miller emphasized.

Miller added Montanans don't need their drivers licenses to register, but it could speed up the process.

Folks can use their tribal IDs or something with their name and address, like a bill or pay stub.

About 14% of eligible Montana voters are not yet registered to vote, according to the nonprofit organization VoteAmerica.

Miller noted people can call the Montana voter hotline at 406-888-VOTE or their local county elections office if they have questions. And there's also a website that can point people to the closest place to register.

"It should be fairly simple to find your elections office," Miller explained. "You can go to voteinmt.org and search by county and will have the address and phone number right there."

Miller stressed because the state doesn't have online or automatic voter registration, it's important Montana allows in-person registration through Election Day.

"It increases the accessibility, increases the amount of people that are able to access voting in the state. So I think it's crucial," Miller concluded.

Miller advised people to allow for a bit of extra time to vote because of social distancing requirements.
