Business Leaders Face Climate Challenges, Urge Federal Investments

AUGUSTA, Maine -- Business leaders are urging Congress to take action to curb climate change by supporting the Biden administration's Build Back Better plan, to be voted on this week.

They said not only will the measures help the U.S. contribute to stopping the most catastrophic effects of climate change, but they can boost local economies.

Jim Doyle, president of the nonprofit Business Forward, pointed to data that show Maine imported 100% of its fossil fuels in 2019, and switching to in-state renewables could generate $4 billion dollars to buy local energy.

"Most states spend billions and many states spent tens of billions importing coal, oil and gas to power their economies," Doyle observed. "Renewables, solar and wind represent an opportunity to keep that money in state, to essentially 'Buy Local.'"

Opponents of the Build Back Better bill say it goes too far, and $3.5 trillion over a decade is too expensive. But Doyle countered the cost of climate change is worth the investment.

In addition to funding for clean-energy investments, the bill includes expansions to the social safety net and changes to the tax code.

Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, is among a group of House Democrats who want to prioritize a traditional physical infrastructure bill, including funding for roads and bridges, buildings, over the larger budget-reconciliation package.

An infrastructure bill already has been passed by the Senate, but Doyle noted businesses across Maine and the U.S. are already feeling the financial impacts of climate change.

"Severe weather and extreme temperatures are spiking commodity prices, disrupting supply chains, damaging plants and equipment, and messing with consumer demand for their products," Doyle explained.

He added clean-energy investments represent an opportunity for the U.S. to be a leader in energy innovation and manufacturing.
