Veteranos y familias de militares logran fácil acceso a la atención médica

AUSTIN, Texas -- Los veteranos recién regresados o incluso aquellos que ya regresaron hace años enfrentan obstáculos, y una de las grandes dificultades es cómo elegir la mejor atención médica. Una nueva herramienta de navegación está diseñada para ayudar.

El presidente estatal de AARP, John Vasquez, dice que hay más de 17 millones de veteranos en los EE. UU., incluso antes de la pandemia de COVID-19, luchando para decidir qué opción de atención médica les serviría mejor. Dice que a pesar del servicio que han prestado al país, demasiados veteranos aún no reciben la atención médica que se han ganado.

"El 60% de todos los veteranos son elegibles para servicios de atención medica VA, pero menos de la mitad de esos veteranos elegibles realmente usan beneficios para la salud VA, según un estudio de Rand," asegura Vasquez.

AARP ha introducido una nueva herramienta de navegación para ayudar a los veteranos y sus familias a determinar sus necesidades de atención médica. Más información y otros recursos para veteranos están en: www.aarp.org/veterans.

Con más de 340 mil veteranos diagnosticados con COVID-19 y casi 15 mil muertes reportadas por los centros médicos VA, el acceso a la atención médica es una preocupación creciente. Vasquez señala que para usar la herramienta de navegación, los veteranos no tienen que ser miembros de AARP.

"Lo que hace esa herramienta es ayudarle a conocer los beneficios de atención medica que se brindan a través de VA, y del Departamento de Defensa, para comprender también como solicitar e inscribirse en el cuidado de la salud VA," informa Vasquez.

Además de las posibilidades de beneficios para la salud, la herramienta paso a paso de 28 páginas muestra a los veteranos cómo calificar, solicitar, inscribirse e identificar representantes que tienen experiencia y conocimiento para responder preguntas comunes que los ayudarán.
