SALEM, Ore. -- Un nuevo proyecto con subsidio del gobierno federal tiene como objetivo invitar a estudiantes hispanos en Oregón a carreras de agricultura y tecnología.

Chemeketa Community College en Willamette Valley ha recibido una subvención del Departamento de Agricultura de Estados Unidos. El proyecto proporcionará exenciones de matrícula y pasantías pagadas para estudiantes de high school, y colocará a 12 alumnos de ciencias agrícolas de la universidad como mentores en las preparatorias locales.

Tim Ray es decano en Ciencia y Tecnología Agrícola en Chemeketa. Él quiere luchar contra la idea errónea de que el trabajo relacionado con la agricultura solo se realiza en el campo.

"Se trata realmente de capacitar a la gente sobre como administrar empresas agrícolas y trabajar con toda la tecnología que se incluye en la producción de alimentos, fibras y combustibles que hacen funcionar al mundo," explica Ray.

Él dice que hay trabajos basados en la ciencia de la agricultura, así como oportunidades en marketing e incluso finanzas. El subsidio destinará casi $275,000 a Chemeketa.

Ray dice que la universidad está trabajando arduamente para ofrecer cursos en varios idiomas, especialmente los que no tienen créditos.

"Eso es importante para nosotros: eliminar esa barrera del idioma, tanto como sea posible," asegura Ray. "Tratamos de tener personal bilingüe en el edificio."

La U-S-D-A ha estado seleccionando proyectos de instituciones de educación superior al servicio de la comunidad hispana, incluida Chemeketa, para financiarles mediante becas.
