The Build Back Better Act is on ice in Congress, but a Minnesota labor leader says reforms in the bill are needed to propel the lives of workers who keep America's economy running.

The legislation seemed poised to pass until Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., pulled his support.

Bruce Crane, assistant vice president of the Communication Workers of America Local 7201, feels it is time for Congress to stop catering to the concerns of corporate leaders and instead focus on workers responsible for making their businesses thrive. Crane pointed out the plan would help working families in many ways.

"Allowing Medicare to negotiate reduced prices for expensive drugs, even for diabetics on insulin, access to high-quality preschool and child care," Crane outlined. "And also for the Child Tax Credit that they want to extend and make permanent. "

With no permanent extension imminent, the monthly payments under the expanded Child Tax Credit wrapped up this month. Republican opponents of the public spending bill argued it would add a damaging amount to the country's deficit. While the plan comes with a nearly $2 trillion price tag. Supporters countered the spending would be spread out over a decade.

The bill includes a proposal for "civil penalties" or fines on employers who illegally retaliate against workers trying to form or join a union. Crane asserted the penalties would help level the playing field where workers are often targeted.

"Before they could do anything," Crane recounted. "And really, very minor penalties where they'd have to post something on the wall or something."

The Build Back Better Act contains provisions to support unions and its members, including a tax deduction up to $250 for dues.
