Con el voto por correo en marcha, la temporada electoral ha llegado a Missouri, pero los votantes con discapacidades siguen enfrentándose a desafíos.

Si bien los trabajadores electorales están capacitados para ayudar a los votantes con discapacidades si solicitan ayuda, los defensores argumentan que los métodos y la tecnología de accesibilidad deben hacer posible una votación más independiente.

El estado cuenta con varios métodos para ayudar a los votantes con discapacidades a acceder a las urnas.

Kara Clark Summers, de la Asociación de Secretarios del Condado y Autoridades Electorales de Missouri, dice que los trabajadores electorales están capacitados para ofrecer asistencia a cualquier persona que la solicite.

"Queremos asegurarnos de que todas las personas se sientan cómodas y puedan votar de forma independiente, o que podamos ayudarles en lo que necesiten," asegura Clark Summers.

La fecha límite de Missouri para registrarse para votar en las elecciones de noviembre es el 12 de octubre.

Los defensores de personas con discapacidades dicen que las nuevas restricciones de identificación que requiere que las personas tengan una identificación vigente presentan desafíos financieros y logísticos, incluido el tener una dirección, lo cual afecta a las personas sin hogar.

Nicole Noblet es defensora en Missouri y habla a través de un dispositivo de comunicación aumentativa y alternativa. Ella dice que si bien una boleta por correo es una opción, no es buena para ella.

"Tendría que pedirle a mi mama que marque mi boleta, porque no tengo las habilidades motoras en mis manos para poder llenar los círculos pequeños," explica Noblet. "Y me gustaría poder votar en privado y de forma independiente, esto es importante para mí."

Noblet dice que en su experiencia durante las elecciones municipales, el equipo de votación accesible no ha estado disponible en todos los lugares y debe viajar a una de las dos ubicaciones para usar esta tecnología. Ella espera que eventualmente Missouri permita el uso del voto accesible por correo.

"Algún día, tal vez Missouri permita el uso de sistemas accesibles de voto por correo que son utilizados por militares estadounidenses que prestan servicio en el extranjero, y que se utilizan también en varias ciudades de California y el condado de McLean, Illinois," dice Noblet.

El voto accesible por correo consiste en una boleta enviada por correo electrónico al votante.
