Juneteenth conmemora un capítulo importante en la historia negra

Hoy marca un capítulo histórico en la historia de Estados Unidos para los negros. En esta fecha de 1865, los esclavos de Texas se enteraron de que estaban libres de la servidumbre, más de dos años después de que el presidente Abraham Lincoln firmara la Proclamación de Emancipación. El nombre "Juneteenth" es una combinación del mes y la fecha en que el General del Ejército de la Unión, Gordon Granger, hizo el anuncio en Galveston. Eunice Trotter es directora del Programa de Preservación del Patrimonio Negro de Indiana Landmarks. Ella dice que la fecha histórica tiene una conexión con Indiana.

"La 28 Tropa de Color de los Estados Unidos de Indiana fue a Galveston, Texas, y en muchos casos, a punta de pistola, forzaron la liberación de los afroamericanos," mencionó además Trotter.

En la década de 1860, Indiana tenía más de 60 asentamientos negros. El nombre oficial de la fiesta es Juneteenth National Independence Day. Se celebra con festivales familiares, desfiles, obras de teatro, lecturas de poesía y más. El presidente Joe Biden firmó el proyecto de ley que crea el feriado como ley en 2021.

La investigación de los Archivos Nacionales indica que entre las décadas de 1910 y 1970, seis millones de esclavos liberados viajaron al norte, medio oeste y oeste de los EE. UU. Querían escapar de las leyes discriminatorias de "Jim Crow" y buscar mejores oportunidades económicas y educativas. Pero Trotter explica que muchos de los esclavos liberados en Texas no se unieron a lo que históricamente se conoce como "La Gran Migración".

"Tengo entendido que muchas de esas personas se quedaron allí en Galveston. No se fueron y corrieron tras la libertad, porque eran libres de estar allí," expresó también Trotter.

Un estudio del Instituto Brookings de 2021 sobre los datos de la Oficina del Censo muestra que a fines de la década de 1970 surgió la "Nueva Gran Migración". Muchos jóvenes negros con educación universitaria, desalentados por los disturbios raciales, la discriminación y la pérdida de trabajos debido a la industrialización, comenzaron a regresar al sur.
