Subvención para estudiantes tribales obtiene financiación permanente en OR

Un programa de becas universitarias para estudiantes tribales en Oregón recibió una extensión en el presupuesto de este año. La Beca para Estudiantes Tribales de Oregón se financiará con $ 24 millones. Cubre los costos para que los miembros de las nueve tribus reconocidas a nivel federal del estado asistan a la universidad en Oregón. Sandy Henry es la Directora de Educación de Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. Ella explica que los estudiantes de su tribu que recibieron la subvención el año pasado sintieron un alivio en su carga financiera.

"Este programa les ha abierto las puertas, les ha aliviado un poco el estrés de tratar de ser un estudiante de tiempo completo y un empleado de tiempo completo y equilibrar eso," indicó también Henry. "Esto está ayudando a aliviar eso."

El programa se inició el año pasado con $ 19 millones pero pasó a tener financiamiento continuo en el presupuesto de este año. Según la Comisión Coordinadora de Educación Superior de Oregón, solo el 45 % de los estudiantes nativos americanos completan una licenciatura en seis años, en comparación con el 68 % de todos los estudiantes.

Henry dice que la subvención no es solo para las principales universidades del estado.

"Tenemos una gran cantidad de personas que se dedican a la técnica comercial y tenemos una universidad comunitaria local fabulosa que enfatiza muchos de los programas técnicos comerciales. Entonces, el programa de Becas para Estudiantes Tribales de Oregón puede ayudar con eso, ayudar a que suceda para nuestros adultos jóvenes tribales," reiteró además Henry.

La gobernadora Tina Kotek y la Comisión Coordinadora de Educación Superior de Oregón originalmente solicitaron $ 40 millones en fondos para el programa.
