Help for mental-health problems just got easier to find in California with the launch of a new podcast and the expansion of the Parent & Youth Helpline. The first episode of the podcast, called Breaking the Stigma, is available today - and features influencers from the music industry talking about their struggles with mental health.

Lisa Pion-Berlin, president and CEO of Parents Anonymous, is co-hosting the series.

"Most of these people are parents or talked about their own childhood," she said. "Some of them are even grandparents, some of them have experienced suicidal ideation, some of them experienced extreme depression. Some of them talked about the lack of acceptance in the Black community for a father to talk about those issues."

The first few episodes feature interviews with R&B singer/songwriter Amina Buddafly, music producer Jon Asher, hip-hop artist OG Cuicide, and co-host D.J. Mike Gdnss. Parents Anonymous also runs the Parent & Youth Helpline, at 855-427-2736, where people can talk to a trained counselor.

The state just extended the grant that supports the California Parent & Youth Helpline for another two years. Pion-Berlin said it allows the helpline to stay open an extra two hours every day - from 8 a-m to 10 p-m.

"So those additional two hours will hopefully be helpful for parents who are coming from work later or their children or have not gone to bed yet," she said. "Also for teens who call us who might be up late studying and want to text us or call us later. "

People can also text or live chat with a counselor via the website caparentyouthhelpline.org.
