This Saturday, North Carolinians who are dedicated to fighting climate change and air pollution will be honored at the annual CleanAIRE Affair fundraiser.

CleanAIRE NC, a nonprofit environmental group, will present the 2023 Blue Sky Awards to recognize their honorees' commitment.

Yancey Fouché, director of sustainability at Davidson College, is among this year's honorees. She will be awarded the Alan Burns Award for Sustainability. Fouché's work includes the development of a Climate Action Plan aimed at cutting emissions by 50% over the next five years.

"That lens led us to honestly discard some projects that would have been maybe popular and more readily like visible and available for our students and our faculty and staff community," Fouché pointed out.

Fouché's dedication to the cause extends beyond the college campus through Davidson's Sustainability Scholars program, with which she empowers students to actively engage with environmental issues at a local level. She emphasized the initiative has nurtured future sustainability leaders and encourages them to find ways to continue to create lasting impact.

Ray Addison II, vice president of sales and marketing for electric vehicle charging station firm Go-Station, will be honored with the Community Partner of the Year award for his work in creating a Green District in Charlotte's Historic West End. He said since he moved to the area more than a decade ago, his passion has been finding ways to impact underserved communities. Addison has helped install EV charging stations in often-overlooked neighborhoods.

"The amount of tailpipe emissions that is generated disproportionately impacts this particular community," Addison asserted. "By installing these EV charging stations, we're helping mitigate that on a couple of fronts."

Addison explained one way the charging stations help is by pouring into the local economy while helping curb emissions. Both recipients expressed their gratitude for the chance to collaborate with local individuals and organizations like CleanAIRE NC, and want others to know making a positive impact doesn't always require grand gestures.

The CleanAIRE Affair will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Discovery Place Science Museum in Charlotte.
