Noviembre fue el Mes de la Concientización sobre la Diabetes, pero de cara a las vacaciones, los diabéticos saben que no pueden perder de vista el control de la enfermedad. Y la tecnología está facilitando el control de la enfermedad desde casa.

Más de 520,000 habitantes de Washington han sido diagnosticados con diabetes.

La doctora Mamatha Palanati es la directora del programa médico de diabetes de Kaiser Permanente en Washington. Afirma que la enfermedad debe controlarse de cerca, porque puede provocar graves complicaciones de salud.

Palanati señala que, afortunadamente, en algunos casos las personas no necesitan salir de sus hogares para hacer esto.

"En el mundo actual, hay una forma mucho más fácil de hacerlo, como la telesalud," dice Palanati. "Telesalud ofrece múltiples vías para el seguimiento y la conexión con la atención medica de cualquier individuo."

Palanati dice que las personas que controlan la diabetes aún deben planificar la visita a su médico en persona al menos una vez al año. El control de otros factores, como la presión arterial y el colesterol, también puede ayudar a reducir las complicaciones.

Palanati afirma que la tecnología de vigilancia también puede ayudar a la gente.

"Los familiares y cuidadores, o cualquiera que pueda ocuparse de esa persona en concreto," asegura Palanati, "pueden hacerlo a distancia y controlar su diabetes de una forma mucho mejor."

Palanati subraya que la diabetes es una enfermedad crónica.

"No lo veas como una tarea adicional ni nada parecido," subraya Palanati, "sino como parte de tu vida. Así que mantente activo, asegurándote de que te adaptas a los estilos de vida saludables. Puede que no sea perfecto, pero haz lo que puedas."
