Un informe analizó el impacto del dinero de corporaciones con influencia extranjera en las elecciones en seis estados. Washington encabezó la lista con la mayor cantidad de donaciones. OpenSecrets analizó las donaciones de campaña de más de 800 empresas con un 5% de propiedad extranjera agregada o un propietario extranjero individual de más del 1%, para las elecciones a nivel estatal entre 2018 y 2022. El estado de Washington recibió más de $67 millones en contribuciones durante ese tiempo. Anna Massoglia es la directora editorial y de investigaciones de OpenSecrets.

"Realmente subraya la necesidad de transparencia para abordar los desafíos que plantean estas empresas que son, al menos en parte, de propiedad extranjera y una mayor necesidad de examinar la influencia que generan, así como quién mueve los hilos detrás de escena," insistió la entrevistada.

La compañía energética Phillips 66, Coca Cola y BP fueron algunos de los mayores contribuyentes a las elecciones del estado de Washington.

Massoglia dice que ha habido algún intento de tomar medidas enérgicas contra el impacto del dinero extranjero en las elecciones estadounidenses.

"En Washington, el Consejo Municipal de Seattle aprobó un proyecto de ley que prohíbe el gasto político en las elecciones locales por parte de corporaciones que alcancen el mismo umbral de influencia extranjera: 5% de propiedad extranjera agregada o 1% de propiedad individual, pero incluso con eso seguíamos viendo cantidades importantes que van a Washington a nivel estatal," explicó también Massoglia.

Los otros estados analizados en este informe fueron Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana y Nueva York. En los seis estados, OpenSecrets encontró más de $163 millones en contribuciones.
