Se espera que VP Harris enfrente racismo y sexismo después retirada de Biden

La vicepresidenta Kamala Harris es ahora la favorita para la nominación presidencial demócrata de 2024 después de que el presidente Joe Biden abandonara la carrera el domingo. Harris es la primera mujer en ocupar el segundo cargo más alto del país, y también la primera estadounidense con herencia negra y del sur de Asia en hacerlo.

El profesor de derecho de la Universidad de Nuevo México, Josh Kastenberg, dice que espera que Harris enfrente un aluvión de comentarios racistas y sexistas, tanto sutiles como directos.

"Si piensas en 2016 y en la cantidad de contenido misógino dirigido contra Hillary Clinton, verás que ahora lo es aún más en lo que respecta a Harris (antifeminismo, misoginia, racismo) e incluso incluiría el antisemitismo," explicó Kastenberg.

Enfatiza que los comentarios antisemitas podrían ser parte de la retórica porque el esposo de Harris, Doug Emhoff, es judío. El candidato presidencial republicano Donald Trump, que lidera las encuestas, ha dicho que cree que Harris será más fácil de derrotar que el presidente Biden.

Algunos políticos demócratas comenzaron a pedir que Biden se hiciera a un lado después de su pobre desempeño contra Trump en el debate televisado del mes pasado. Kastenberg cree que fueron necesarios demócratas de renombre incluso para expresar dudas sobre la salud y la aptitud mental de Biden antes de que el presidente tomara su decisión.

"Cuando intervino la ex presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes, Nancy Pelosi, pensé: 'Se acabó el trabajo.' Porque son personas con las que ha trabajado, en las que ha confiado y valorado durante muchos años, y creo que ese fue probablemente el punto de inflexión," insistió también el entrevistado.

Kastenberg agrega que la retirada de Biden no significa que Harris no pueda enfrentarse a un rival cuando la convención demócrata se reúna en Chicago el 19 de agosto. Ahora que se retiró, el compañero de fórmula de Trump, J.D. Vance, encabeza los llamados para que Biden renuncie a la presidencia, en lugar de cumplir el resto de su mandato.
