Coalición insta al estado a alimentar a todos los estudiantes de escuelas en OR

Es la Semana Nacional del Almuerzo Escolar y grupos en Oregón están aprovechando esta oportunidad para alentar a los legisladores a que pongan las comidas escolares a disposición de todos los niños del estado. La coalición School Meals for All está pidiendo legislación para que el desayuno y el almuerzo sean gratuitos para todos los estudiantes de Oregón. La coalición también quiere que los legisladores adopten la política durante la sesión legislativa de 2025. David Wieland, de Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon, dice que el estado ya está cerca de alcanzar este objetivo.

"Alrededor de 1,191 escuelas en el estado ya están participando y estamos a solo 65 escuelas. Estamos muy cerca de la meta en la realización de esta visión," enfatizó Wieland.

Nueve estados han adoptado comidas escolares universales. Los opositores han señalado el alto costo de proporcionar comidas a todos los estudiantes del estado. Pero uno de cada seis niños de Oregón enfrenta hambre, según datos de Feeding America.

Loren Naldoza, del Oregon Food Bank, explica que las comidas escolares gratuitas tienen una serie de beneficios, incluida la ayuda académica a los estudiantes.

"Nuestra lucha por un programa universal de alimentación escolar garantiza que cualquier estudiante que no tenga almuerzo ese día no tendrá que preocuparse por tener hambre, porque habrá algo listo para ellos. Y veremos que esto dará sus frutos, a corto y largo plazo," argumentó Naldoza.

Wieland agrega que la política que impulsa la coalición School Meals for All también mejoraría la calidad de los alimentos.

"Pasar a un programa gratuito de desayuno y almuerzo elimina los gastos administrativos, y nuestra propuesta aumentará ligeramente los fondos para que más dinero se destine a ingredientes frescos cocinados desde cero, que los niños disfrutan y merecen," insistió además Wieland.
