NV advocates respond as House budget resolution could usher in Medicaid cuts

Congressional Republicans passed a budget resolution that could impact Medicaid, and Nevada advocates are worried. Democrats say the proposal could gut Medicaid, but Republicans say reform is needed.

Nicole Cannizzaro, Nevada Senate Majority Leader, said not only would it jeopardize economic security for thousands, but cause chaos for the already debilitated health-care system and cost the state budget billions. She is calling on her Republican colleagues to vote down the proposal.

"Any Republican tax bill that cuts Medicaid or any other essential funding for Nevadans should be at the top of the list to say 'no' to. Republicans only have a very small majority in the U.S. House, and one courageous Republican could likely stop any Medicaid cuts from happening," she said.

But Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nevada, called the budget resolution a "comprehensive blueprint" that prioritizes identifying areas to invest in, like border security, national defense and domestic energy production. It also calls for the identification of where the federal government can save.

Amber Falgout, communications director with Battle Born Progress, calls Medicaid a lifeline. Prior to Governor Brian Sandoval opting into the Medicaid expansion in 2014, she said many Nevadans had limited access. But under the Affordable Care Act, the expansion meant more Nevadans could be covered by Medicaid, including her.

"It removed the need for me to be on my ex-husband's insurance and allowed me to break free from an abusive relationship. I depended on Medicaid for five years while I was working my way through college," she said.

All states rely on federal matching funds to finance their state Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program. If federal Medicaid spending cuts are made, states would be left to pick up the slack. If that were the case, millions of enrollees could lose coverage.
