Las Pennsylvania's elecciones primarias, de Pensilvania están programadas para el 20 de mayo, y un grupo no partidista está trabajando para crear conciencia sobre el registro de votantes.

Más de 8.7 millones de residentes de Pensilvania son elegibles para votar en las elecciones municipales.

Amy Widestrom, directora ejecutiva de la Liga de Mujeres Votantes de Pensilvania, está preocupada por la baja participación en las elecciones locales, y señala que en el condado de Montgomery la participación fue del 41.9% en 2023.

Dice que en un distrito electoral hubo menos del 1%, es decir, solo 379 votantes. Destaca la importancia de votar para los puestos clave.

"Estas son las personas que se encargan de los asuntos de nuestros condados locales, nuestras escuelas, jueces y juzgados estatales, dice Widestrom. "Por eso, estas son elecciones extraordinariamente importantes. Y, sin embargo, en 2023, para la Suprema Corte de Pensilvania, solo obtuvimos una participación del 35%."

Agrega que los habitantes de Pensilvania deben registrarse para votar antes del 5 de mayo para emitir su voto en las primarias y el último día para solicitar una boleta por correo es el día 13 de mayo.

Widestrom dice que la baja participación electoral ha sido un problema constante, especialmente en elecciones fuera de ciclo, como las primarias y las elecciones generales en años impares.

Agrega que la Liga organizará eventos de participación cívica para informar a los votantes sobre las próximas elecciones.

"Organizaremos una serie de seminarios web llamados "Conceptos básicos sobre las urnas", en los que destacaremos tanto la importancia de estas elecciones municipales como la manera de conocer a los candidatos," explica Widestrom. "Así que vamos a organizar un seminario sobre como juzgar a nuestros jueces y cómo podemos obtener información sobre los candidatos judiciales."

Widestrom agrega que la Liga actualizará su sitio web en Vote411.org con información de los candidatos a nivel estatal antes de que los habitantes de Pensilvania se dirijan a las urnas o envíen su voto por correo.
