Today is Transgender Day of Visibility, a day set aside to recognize the contributions of transgender people and raise awareness of discrimination against them.

More than 92,000 people in Texas identify as transgender.

Atlantis Narcisse, director of education and engagement with Transgender Education Network of Texas - or TENT - said members of the community are parents, workers and leaders who deserve to be respected.

"Any support that you can make in reference to trans and gender-expansive people is a great thing," said Narcisse. "It could be writing you congressman, challenging some of the things in the spaces that you're around, but most personable about it is being present in trans and gender-expansive individuals' lives."

Narcisse said TENT works to stop discrimination through social, legislative and corporate education. It's the largest BIPOC trans-led advocacy organization in the state.

More than 75 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills have been filed in this year's Texas legislative session, and more than 800 nationwide. Narcisse said these attacks on trans people are affecting their mental health.

"I think we've gotten past some of the stigma that - especially Black and Brown communities - around mental health," said Narcisse. "We have seen an increased number of therapy requests. It is a tough thing to know that your entire existence is being targeted nationally. But you are responsible for taking care of your mental health."

She added that one way to stop the discrimination is to embrace and understand the trans community.

"We are one demographic of people who have navigated society's and communities' social norms," said Narcisse. "But it would be nice for people to come within our community - and not come just for entertainment, but come in there and truly see us as human bodies that happen to be trans."
