Report shows air quality is poor for Hoosiers with asthma

May is Asthma Awareness Month and a new American Lung Association report shows that Indiana's air is harmful for those with the condition.

Between 2021 and 2023, Indiana counties received mostly C, D, and F grades for poor air quality.

Asthma symptoms like chest tightness or shortness of breath often flare up after inhaling polluted air, which could require hospitalization.

Tiffany Nichols, Indiana chapter advocacy director for the American Lung Association, said Hoosiers with respiratory health conditions can take steps to protect themselves.

"On days when the air is not so great, we encourage people to utilize apps and things of that nature, so they can get a grasp on what the air is like that day," said Nichols. "We encourage you to stay indoors as much as you can on days where the air pollution isn't great. We also encourage individuals to utilize air filters, if they have those available, as well as purifiers."

Nichols suggested delaying outdoor exercise, lawn mowing, or filling the gas tank until the evening hours to reduce exposure.

Lake, Marion, Porter, and Whitley counties all received an F rating based on the their high amounts of particle pollution.

People over the age of 65 are the most vulnerable to the effects of contaminated air. Marion County has the highest number of people within that age group at 132,000.

Nichols said people concerned about their asthma symptoms should consider the trends shown in the American Lung Association's report.

"I would be looking at the numbers from last year-to-year and seeing if there were any things that were in my control," said Nichols. "Last year, the high temperatures and then the Canadian wildfires are what attributed to our not-so-great rate this year in the report."

She added that residents can use air filters for protection against airborne pollution.

In addition to the risks for people with asthma, ozone pollution is linked to an increased risk of premature birth and lower birth weight in newborns.

Particle pollution can cause heart attacks and strokes.
