Un nuevo informe del Center for Children and Families de la Universidad de Georgetown afirma que los recortes a Medicaid propuestos por la administración Trump perjudicarían la fuerza laboral del sector de cuidado infantil de Iowa, donde casi el 38 % de los empleados dependen de prestaciones federales. La directora ejecutiva de Common Good Iowa, Anne Discher, afirma que los recortes a Medicaid perjudicarían aún más los ya bajos salarios de los trabajadores de cuidado infantil en el estado.

"Actualmente, tenemos un sistema de cuidado infantil muy sobrecargado, lo que representa lo que solo puedo llamar una falla del mercado. Lo que los padres pueden pagar por el cuidado infantil simplemente no alcanza para cubrir los salarios dignos de los cuidadores. De hecho, estos subvencionan nuestro sistema actual con sus bajos salarios," expresó Discher.

La mayoría de los estados, incluido Iowa, enfrentarían la disyuntiva de aumentar los impuestos para compensar el déficit de Medicaid y reducir el gasto en educación, que representa la mayor parte del presupuesto de Iowa.

Daniel Hains, de la National Association for the Education of Young Children, dice que a nivel nacional, los costos del cuidado infantil están aumentando para las familias y los programas que brindan servicios, especialmente durante el año pasado.

"Los programas informan que están pagando más por el alquiler. Están pagando más por el seguro, tanto de responsabilidad civil como de propiedad, y también están teniendo que pagar más por la retención del personal, debido a la escasez de fondos públicos en el sector," insistió además Hains.

Los datos de salud de KFF Health muestran que Iowa podría perder alrededor de $ 731 millones en fondos de Medicaid si se implementan los recortes de la administración Trump. La administración afirma estar trabajando para cumplir su promesa de campaña de reducir el gasto público.
