Federal tax credits for NM's EV owners face elimination

Supporters of electric vehicles in New Mexico cite a number of advantages to owning one, but 2026 budget negotiations underway in Washington include elimination of a $7,500 EV tax credit. In his January inaugural address, President Donald Trump promised to undo what he called the "electric vehicle mandate," meaning Biden-era goals for half of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030.

John Higham, Electric Vehicle Association board of directors' member, wonders if this will cause potential buyers to back away.

"It's not going to kill the electric vehicle," he said. "It might slow the acceleration of the adoption of the electric vehicle, but it's certainly not going to reverse the trend."

A majority of the electricity used in an EV is American-made. And an electric vehicle can be charged at home, just like a cell phone. In 2023, New Mexico had more than 11,000 registered EV's, about 5.5% percent of new vehicle sales in the state. The state also mandates that dealerships offer a specific percentage of zero-emission vehicles.

The Republican controlled House has proposed legislation that would extend the tax credit until the end of the year. And analysts say the largest EV automaker, Tesla, owned by Trump associate Elon Musk, would be impacted the most if the tax credit ends. Higham said the fallout of repealing the tax credit could break down along party lines.

"That economic engine that is in those red districts, where there's new battery manufacturing put in, new automotive manufacturing put in, those are the voters that are going to feel it the most, are in those red districts," he continued.

According to the Argonne National Laboratory, consumers can save more than $6,000 in lifetime repair and maintenance costs from an EV compared to a gas-fueled vehicle. It's estimated that the federal government spent about $2 billion in advance point-of-sale E-V tax credit payments in 2024.
