Tax incentives for NV's EVs could end up on the chopping block

Supporters of electric vehicles in Nevada cite several advantages to owning one, but 2026 budget negotiations underway in Congress include eliminating a $7,500 EV tax credit.

The legislation is one step closer to becoming reality as the U.S. House passed it early Thursday morning. It now heads to the Senate.

President Donald Trump has pledged to undo what he calls the "electric vehicle mandate," meaning Biden-era goals for half of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030.

John Higham, a member of the Electric Vehicle Association board of directors, said he wonders if this will cause potential buyers to withdraw.

"It's not going to kill the electric vehicle," he said. "It might slow the acceleration of the adoption of the electric vehicle, but it's certainly not going to reverse the trend."

The majority of the electricity used in an EV is American-made. An electric vehicle can be charged at home like a cell phone.

New data by Recurrent finds that EVs account for more than 13% of all vehicle registrations, which translates to more than 47,000 EVs on Nevada roads. The Silver State has adopted California's EPA waiver to ban the sale of gasoline-powered cars by 2035.

The Republican-controlled House has proposed legislation that would extend the tax credit until the end of the year. And analysts say the largest EV automaker, Tesla, owned by GOP megadonor Elon Musk, would be impacted the most if the tax credit sunsets.

Higham said the fallout of repealing the tax credit could break down along party lines.

"That economic engine that is in those red districts, where there's new battery manufacturing put in, new automotive manufacturing put in," he said. "Those are the voters that are going to feel it the most, are in those red districts."

According to the Argonne National Laboratory, consumers can save more than $6,000 in lifetime repair and maintenance costs from an EV compared with a gas-fueled vehicle. It's estimated that the federal government spent about $2 billion in advance point-of-sale EV tax credit payments in 2024.
