El último informe de Kentucky sobre muertes por sobredosis de drogas muestra una disminución en las sobredosis mortales y, por primera vez, una disminución entre los residentes negros de Kentucky. Grupos de toda la Mancomunidad han estado trabajando para ampliar el acceso a servicios de reducción de daños. Latosha Perry, directora ejecutiva de Empowher with Open Arms, Inc., una organización sin fines de lucro con sede en Louisville, afirma que su organización ofrece servicios de prevención a adolescentes, así como terapia grupal e individual para adultos que generalmente deben asistir a terapia para poder ver a sus hijos.

"Algunas personas que luchan con la adición o recién salen de la cárcel no tienen el dinero para cubrir esos gastos, por lo que generalmente disminuye la tasa de reunificación con su familia," explicó Perry.

Las muertes por sobredosis en la Mancomunidad disminuyeron por tercer año consecutivo, con una disminución de poco más del 30 % en 2024, en comparación con el año anterior. Aun así, más de 1400 residentes de Kentucky murieron por sobredosis de drogas.

Ashley Smith, de Black Soil Kentucky, dice que su organización ha distribuido unidades Narcan y ha brindado capacitación a los agricultores, para que estén equipados para actuar como primeros en responder.

"Hemos trabajado para combinar la extension educativa y la asistencia técnica con distribuciones directas de productos en comunidades rurales y urbanas," aseguró también Smith.
