A new initiative aims to help adults get high-quality job credentials which can lead to economic prosperity, in Louisiana and 11 other states.

Called "FutureReady States," the goal is to provide a mix of technical assistance and policy guidance to each state, so they can develop workforce training programs, leading to improved job opportunities and fitting local needs.

Kermit Kaleba, strategy director of employment-aligned credential programs for Lumina Foundation, said they are aiming for a better-qualified workforce.

"We want 75% of U.S. adults in the labor market to have a postsecondary degree or credential of value that leads to economic prosperity," Kaleba explained.

Kaleba acknowledged the goal is ambitious but is needed for the nation to advance and stay competitive in a global economy. Part of the initiative is to track the progress of each state. He noted Lumina is investing more than $2 million in the initial phase of the program.

Lumina will collaborate with five partners to help states align their education and workforce development systems with current labor force needs. The Century Foundation will manage the program in Louisiana.

Andy Stettner, director of economy and jobs for the foundation, said his job will be to ensure the program reaches a diverse range of people.

"How do you make sure that can function -- in the example of Louisiana, 56 different community college campuses -- that people that are actually getting a credential are actually getting a job in those fields?" Stettner outlined.

Stettner added Louisiana employers are looking for people with training and credentials in their respective industries.

"There's not enough 'good' jobs out there," Stettner observed. "They see credentialing as a strategy to fuel business attraction and fuel economic development, and also connecting people that are not in the workforce with the job opportunities that are there in many parts of the state."

Support for this reporting was provided by Lumina Foundation.
