Obama Carries Flag for Economy and Jobs in NV

January 29, 2010

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - President Obama kept the focus on the economy as he traveled to Florida on Thursday to reiterate State of the Union points, and advocates for working families in Nevada say his push for a "jobs bill" makes sense - so long as it includes help for states like Nevada that are swimming in red ink.

Jon Sasser, statewide advocacy coordinator for Legal Services, says the bill needs to include funds targeted to state government that would save jobs and reduce the need for more cuts to vital services.

"First it would help close the one-billion-dollar gap we have in Nevada between now and the end of the biennium; two, the additional federal money would have a multiplier effect on our economy. It would help get things moving again, which would, in turn, increase tax collections down the road. "

The same kind of impact could be accomplished through direct aid to states as part of health care reform, Sasser says. He adds that he is encouraged by Obama's determination to pass health care reform, despite opponents who say it would be a bad move to make during an economic downturn.

While the economy is showing signs of recovery, Barry Gold, director of government relations for AARP-Nevada, says Americans still need help. That's why he is encouraged by Obama's call for Individual Retirement Accounts that would help Nevadans rebuild their nest eggs.

"The automatic IRA would help millions of American workers who don't have a workplace retirement system, and this a proposal that has bipartisan support in Congress, which is no easy task. It's been supported by both employers and workers, as well."

Gold says AARP wants to see Obama put the nation's fiscal house in order, but he says it is critical that Obama stand by his pledge that any deficit reduction plan would steer clear of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.
