Study: Bath Products Could be Cancerous

February 8, 2007

A new study exposes a possible cancer-causing chemical found in at least 15 children's bath products. The substance 1-4 Dioxane is listed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a possible carcinogen, but you won't find it on the bottle as an ingredient. As a byproduct of the manufacturing process, it can be inside of the bottle without being listed on the outside.

Love Albrecht-Howard, a board member of the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow, says the news, literally, hit home with her.

"One of these products is the shampoo that my son has been using for the last ten years! And I'm a person who is careful and cautious -- and I read labels."

Albrecht-Howard adds the group meets tomorrow with Governor Patrick to discuss the study's findings.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration neither reviews nor regulates cosmetics and related products. Julia Brody, executive director of the Silent Spring Institute, is wondering, 'Why not?'

"We really shouldn't be in a situation where we need citizens to send their shampoo to a laboratory to find out what's in it."

The same study also found high concentrations of the same chemical in two adult shampoos. For a full list of the products in which 1-4 Dioxane has been found so far, look online at
