DES MOINES, Iowa - Fifty years ago, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland began selling used books as a fundraiser. The annual book sale now draws thousands of people to the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

To help raise money this year, a performance by Emmy award-winning musician, composer, philanthropist and author Peter Buffett will kick off the sale. Buffett, whose father is financier Warren Buffett, also will share his family's story about their connection with Planned Parenthood, he says.

"Because my parents, and my mother in particular, were very involved in the work, and this being the 50th anniversary of the birth control pill, it seems like a great time to celebrate all their great work. And they asked me to come in, so I'm doing it."

Buffett says his show is more than music - it's a sharing of experiences.

"I found that by telling my own story, it gave people a chance to look into different meanings around the words 'privilege' and 'success' and things like that, so it's a show that's both music and conversation. I take questions throughout the whole show."

This year's book sale runs Sept. 16-20. Volunteers to help with the sale are still needed and can sign up by e-mailing booksale@ppheartland.org.

The Buffett event will be held at Shelslow Auditorium at Drake University on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. Buffett will also talk about his book, "Life is What You Make It."
