Help For Nevada’s Record Number of Job Seekers

September 15, 2010

LAS VEGAS - It's a cruel number -- 195,000 Nevadans are unemployed, with the state's jobless rate ranking first in the nation for two months in a row. Now help is available both online and in person. For jobseekers, Deborah Moore Jaquith with AARP- Nevada says opportunity is now just a click away at a new AARP job search engine that posts opportunities from a large variety of sources.

"Our website pulls resources from government, from business and from job boards to create one site -- one mega-site -- where people can go to find jobs. We'll have over a million jobs posted."

Older job seekers stay unemployed longer. AARP research shows 53 percent of all 45-plus job seekers have been out of work for more than 27 weeks this year. Jaquith notes their seminars will help Nevadans update critical skills, like writing the kind of resume that gets results in today's job market.

"Today, a computerized 'bot' reviews your resume for key words that the companies identify. You may have all the skills you need, but if you're not using those key words, you're not getting in the door."

The website is open to all: AARP.org/jobs.

AARP is also presenting seminars in Reno and Las Vegas to help job seekers polish their skills. The first seminar takes place Tuesday, Sept. 21, in Reno at the Grand Sierra. The Las Vegas seminar will be offered in both English and Spanish at Feria Telemundo on Saturday, Sept. 25. Pre-registration is highly recommended at the AARP-Nevada website.
