NM Kids: Don't Forget Future Generations - Fix Global Warming Now

March 9, 2007

Children are the future and today that future is letting New Mexico lawmakers know it's time to make some environmental changes. Fifteen kids from across the state are at the Capitol showing legislators their award-winning essays and posters on global climate change. Eva Thaddeus of the Sierra Club helped judge the entries. She says the kids are a constituency that shouldn't be ignored.

"It's the generation that we should be considering because in the next 50 years what we do about carbon emissions right now is really going to affect these students in their lifetime."

The students will be meeting with their legislators and sharing their information throughout the day. Thaddeus emphasizes that lawmakers can learn from the kids.

"These legislators can't be experts in everything, and they rely on their constituents to inform them. These kids have done excellent research, and they know a lot about global warming. In many cases, [they know] more than many adults do."
