DES MOINES, Iowa - Every year the AARP Foundation runs a Tax Aide program in Iowa that figures the tax returns for over 20,000 Iowans, for free. Tax Aide state coordinator Elmer Nuessendorfer says most who seek the tax help are seniors or middle- to low-income Iowans. He says even at this late date all the clients needs to do is bring in their records, including the previous year's tax return.

"I always tell people to bring everything, because it's so much easier to weed through the paperwork and pick out the things that I don't need than it is for me to do an amended return because you forgot to bring something in."

He says this year the IRS is offering something new at some locations: sending refunds by debit card.

"For people who do not have a savings account or checking account to deposit their refunds in, we can get them a debit card and they receive the card in about three days' time."

Nuessendorfer says the refund won't be made available on the card until the return is processed, which takes about two weeks. He says that if you need to know where the closest tax preparation location is, go to www.aarp.org or call 1-888-227-7669.
