Iowa Number One in Wind Power Use

DES MOINES - Iowa's high rank in the nation in wind-power generation is tempered by the U.S.' declining rank in global clean-energy investment.

A new report from Pew Charitable Trusts finds that Germany has pushed the U.S. down a notch to third place - and that could put Iowa investments at risk.

Harold Prior, executive director of the Iowa Wind Energy Association, touts Iowa's potential.

"We generate a higher percentage of all of our electricity from wind, by far, than Texas or any other state. Iowa ranks first in the nation in the percentage of electricity generated from wind."

The Pew report notes that clean-energy investments are up 30 percent globally, and that the U.S. still is seen as a leader in developing the next generation of clean-energy technologies and products.

Pew research finds a connection between investments and strong clean-energy policies. Phyllis Cuttino, who directs the Pew Clean Energy Program, sees fast-growing competition to gather up investment cash from the private and public sectors, and wants the report to serve as notice to the nation that action needs to be taken soon to help the U.S. become the major exporter of clean-energy technologies and products.

"As the size of the industry grows, so do the stakes. Countries are adopting policies and programs to attract investment and create manufacturing opportunities."

The full Pew report - "Who's Winning the Clean Energy Race?" - is online at ht.ly/4p2te.
